Gathia ( Crunchy Gram Flour Sticks )


Gathia ( Crunchy Gram Flour Sticks ) ... Gathia is a traditional Indian / Pakistani snack. These crunchy thick sticks are made with gram flour, salt, baking soda, spices and oil. Enjoy it just on its own or with a cup of tea!


Gathia ( Crunchy Gram Flour Sticks )

Serves : 4 - 6


Ingredients :
  • 250 gm.  besan ( gram flour )
  • 1/2 tsp.  salt
  • 1/2 tsp.  baking soda
  • 1/8 tsp.  ajwain ( carom seeds )
  • 1/8 tsp.  kalonji ( nigella seeds )
  • 6 tbsp.  oil
  • Water, as required to knead the dough
  • Oil, for deep frying

Method :
  • Sift the gram flour in a bowl; add salt, baking soda, carom seeds and nigella seeds.
  • Add hot oil and mix all ingredients thoroughly by rubbing between your fingers.
  • Gradually add water, adding enough to form a stiff dough.
  • Heat oil ( for deep frying ) in a wok / karahi or deep frying pan, over medium heat.
  • Use the star shaped disc in the Sev maker or press. Lightly grease the inside cylinder of Sev press, fill with dough and screw the lid.
  • Hold the Sev press over wok, press the dough through the hole by turning the handle and drop directly into the hot oil.
  • Fry on medium heat until they turn light golden, flip them over and fry the other side until golden.
  • Remove from oil and drain on absorbent paper. Break them into small pieces.
  • Cool completely and store in airtight jar.

  3. I always find gathai very addictive. It is very popular here in Indian in the Gujarat region and is known by the same name.
