Aloo Matar Gosht ( Mutton Curry with Potatoes and Peas )

Aloo Matar Gosht ... A traditional Pakistani mutton curry, cooked with potatoes and green peas.

Aloo Matar Gosht ( Mutton Curry with Potatoes and Peas )
*****************************************************************

Ingredients :
  • 1/4 cup oil
  • 125 gm. ( 2 medium ) onions, thinly sliced
  • 250 gm.  tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tsp.  cumin seeds
  • 1/2 kg.  mutton, cubed
  • 1 tbsp.  ginger garlic paste
  • 6 - 8 whole black pepper
  • 4 - 5 cloves
  • 2 large cardamom
  • 2 - 3 small cardamom
  • 2 inch piece cinnamon stick
  • 1 tbsp.  coriander powder
  • 1 tbsp.  red chillies powder
  • 1/4 tsp.  turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp.  or according to taste, salt
  • 3 medium potatoes, peeled & cut in large cubes
  • 1 cup green peas
  • 1/2 tsp.  garam masala powder
  • Pinch of each ( green cardamom, nutmeg & mace; ground )
  • 2 tbsp.  fresh coriander leaves, chopped

Method :
  • Heat oil in a pan, add onions and fry until golden brown.
  • Remove from oil and put in a blender with tomatoes and cumin seeds. Blend to a fine paste ( add little water if needed ).
  • Add mutton, ginger garlic paste, black pepper, cloves, cardamoms and cinnamon stick to the oil; stir & cook for 3 - 4 minutes or until mutton is browned.
  • Add coriander powder, chillies powder, turmeric & salt along with the blended paste of onion & tomatoes.
  • Add enough water to cook the mutton. Bring to a boil, cover and cook over medium heat until the mutton is tender.
  • Now, cook over high heat, stirring constantly until the water dries out and the oil begins to separate.
  • Add potatoes and peas, stir and add enough water ( to cook the potatoes ); cover and cook over medium heat until the potatoes & peas are done.
  • Add enough water for curry/gravy, bring to a boil.
  • Add garam masala & coriander leaves to the curry, cook on very low heat for 3 - 4 minutes until the oil comes to the top.
  • Serve hot with Chapati / Roti, Naan or Paratha.
