Chinioti Kunna Gosht : Eid-ul-Adha Mubarak


Chiniot ( a city in Punjab, Pakistan) is known for its intricately carved wooden furniture all over the world. Kunna gosht is a famous dish from Chiniot. Traditionally, it is cooked in a clay pot (mitti ki handi) which enhances its flavor.  Enjoy this delicious dish this Eid with your family :)

Chinioti Kunna Gosht

Serves : 4 - 6


Ingredients :
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup cooking oil or ghee ( clarified buter )
  • 1/2 kg.  Mutton with bones
  • 3 medium onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp.  turmeric powder
  • 2 tbsp.  ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tsp.  red chilli powder
  • 1 tsp.  crushed red chillies
  • 1 tsp.  white cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp.  black cumin seeds ( kala zeera )
  • 1 tsp.  black pepper powder
  • 1 tsp.  whole coriander seeds
  • 2 green cardamoms
  • 1 black cardamom
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1/2 tsp.  cloves
  • 1/2 tsp.  nutmeg and mace
  • Salt, to taste
  • 3 tbsp.  flour
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped
  • Green chillies, chopped
  • Ginger, sliced
  • Lemon
Method :
  • Heat oil in a heavy base pan. Add mutton, onion, turmeric powder, ginger garlic paste, red chilli powder and crushed red chillies.
  • Cook stirring continuously till the meat changes color.
  • Add 2 to 3 cups water and cook covered, on low heat till the meat is 3/4 tender and a thin gravy is left.
  • Grind white cumin seeds, black cumin seeds, black pepper powder, coriander seeds, green and black cardamoms, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and mace to a fine powder. Add this to the pan with salt.
  • Mix flour with milk and add to the pan. Cook, covered on low flame for 10 - 15 minutes until the gravy is thick according to your liking.
  • Turn off the heat and wait till the oil comes out.
  • Transfer to serving bowl. Garnish with green chillies, sliced ginger and lemon.
  • Serve with tandoori roti or Naan.
