Eid Greetings & Firni ( Rice flour & Milk Pudding )

Pin It

Eid-ul-Fitr is a festival that marks the end of the Holy month of Ramadan. This joyous day is celebrated to give thanks for the blessings of Ramadan. Muslims attend the congregational Eid prayer service which is held in the morning. They wear new clothing, cook delicious food and invite friends and neighbors to celebrate with them. Fasting during Ramadan inspires sympathy for the hungry and needy, and encourages Muslims to donate generously to the poor.

Traditionally, Sheer Khurma ( Milk with Dates) is prepared by Muslims on Eid ul-Fitr in South Asian countries especially Pakistan & India. This special dish is served on the morning of Eid day in the family after the Eid prayer as breakfast, and throughout the day to all the visiting guests.

I'll post its recipe on next Eid Insha-Allah ( I'm still away on vacation, this is a scheduled post ), but here is the recipe of Firni which is also prepared on Eid.

Firni ( Rice flour & Milk Pudding ) is one of the most popular Pakistani dessert after Kheer ( Milk & Rice Dessert ). In Firni, ground rice is used instead of whole rice grain. Its texture is smooth & silky. The addition of khoya makes it more rich & delicious :)

Firni ( Rice flour & Milk Pudding )
***************************************

* Prep. Time : 15 minutes
* Cook Time : 45 - 50 minutes
* Serves : 8 - 10

Ingredients :
  • 2 liter milk
  • 200 gm. sugar (or to taste)
  • 60 gm. rice ( soaked for an hour, drained, dried on kitchen towel & ground )
  • 125 gm. khoya / dry milk powder
  • 4 -5 green cardamom
  • 20 almonds, finely chopped
  • 20 pistachios, finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp. kewra water
  • Almonds & pistachios, sliced for garnishing
Method :
  • Dissolve rice powder in little milk in a small bowl.
  • Pour the remaining milk in a pan and bring to a boil.
  • Once milk is boiled, add sugar & rice ( dissolved in milk ).
  • Cook, stirring constantly for around 5 minutes until it comes to a boil.
  • On medium flame, cook the mixture ( stirring often and scraping the base & sides of the pan ) till it starts to thicken.
  • Add khoya, cardamom powder, almonds & pistachios.
  • Keep on stirring, cook to desired thickness.
  • Remove from heat, add kewra water.
  • Pour in bowls and garnish with almonds and pistachios.
  • Serve chilled.

    happy eid mubarak to you and your family. hope you had great holiday.
    the rice flour and milk pudding looks yummy. for us, we don't have a specific menu for breakfast on eid day.. depends on our favorite food only..after that we go to the mosque for special prayers.
    then we go back home, and here visitors start coming non stop, for a few days. there's plenty of food for everybody :)

  19. Firni is one of my all time favorite desserts........yours looks delicious. I usually add condensed milk instead of khoya and sometimes a pinch of saffron too for flavor variation. Thanks for following my blog....glad to follow you too.
