Achari Aaloo or Pickled Potato Curry

 Achari Aaloo or Pickled Potato Curry ... A tangy potato dish cooked with spices & mango pickle. Chanay ka Salan, Sooji ka halwa, Aloo ki Sabzi & Poori is a very popular Sunday brunch in Pakistan.

Achari Aaloo or Pickled Potato Curry

Serves : 4

Ingredients :
  • 250 gms. potatoes
  • 2 tbsp. oil
  • 1/4 tsp. cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp. mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp. fenugreek seeds
  • 1/4 tsp. nigella seeds ( kalonji )
  • 3 - 4 curry leaves
  • 1/4 tsp. anise seeds ( saunf ), crushed
  • 1/4 tsp. coriander seeds, crushed
  • 1/4 tsp. carom seeds ( ajwaiin )
  • 1 tsp. salt ( or to taste )
  • 1 to 1 1/2 tsp. red chillies, crushed
  • 1/4 tsp. turmeric powder
  • 3/ 4 cup water
  • 1 green chilli, chopped
  • 1 tbsp. fresh coriander, chopped
  • 2 - 3 tbsp. lemon or mango pickle ( Achar ) OR 1/4 cup tamarind pulp
Method :
  • Boil the potatoes until well done. Let them cool, then peel and dice.
  • Heat the oil in a pan and fry the cumin seeds, mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, nigella seeds & curry leaves until they splutter.
  • Add the potatoes & all the spices with water.
  • Mash the potaoes a little bit & cook on low heat for 3 - 4 minutes.
  • Chop up large pieces of pickle. Add chopped coriander, green chilli & pickle in the potatoes before taking them off the heat.
  • Serve with Puri, Semolina Halwa & Chickpeas Curry
